What does a BaZi calculator do?
A BaZi calculator turns your birth date, time and city into four pillars (year, month, day and hour), each holding one heavenly stem and one earthly branch. From there you get your Day Master, the stem on the day pillar that stands for you, plus the spread of the five elements across your chart.
Example result: born 4 February 2000 in Jakarta
Two people were born in Jakarta on the same day, one at 10:00 and one at 21:00. Li Chun fell at 19:40 WIB that year, so the morning birth still belongs to the Jǐ Mǎo year (Rabbit) while the evening birth starts the Gēng Chén year (Dragon).
| Pillar | Born at 10:00 | Born at 21:00 |
|---|---|---|
| Year | 己卯Jǐ Mǎo, Earth (Yin), Rabbit | 庚辰Gēng Chén, Metal (Yang), Dragon |
| Month | 丁丑Dīng Chǒu, Fire (Yin), Ox | 戊寅Wù Yín, Earth (Yang), Tiger |
| Day | 壬辰Rén Chén, Water (Yang), Dragon | 壬辰Rén Chén, Water (Yang), Dragon |
| Hour | 乙巳Yǐ Sì, Wood (Yin), Snake | 庚戌Gēng Xū, Metal (Yang), Dog |
Both charts share the Day Master 壬 Yang Water, so the core character matches and the differences show up in the year, month and hour pillars. Read the Yang Water Day Master profile
Five-element spread for the 10:00 birth
- Wood26.3%
- Fire20%
- Earth28.8%
- Metal7.5%
- Water17.5%
Earth carries the most weight and Metal the least. Each heavenly stem counts in full, while each earthly branch splits its weight across the elements stored inside it.
Methodology & Computational Precision
Many online BaZi calculators incorrectly compute the year pillar by referencing the Lunar New Year. SPYLL uses true astronomical Solar Terms (Lichun and Jieqi) based on solar ecliptic longitudes. Read the full methodology
Lichun Solar Year Transition
In classical BaZi (San Ming Tong Hui), a new energetic year begins when the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 315 degrees (Lichun, around February 4), not on Lunar New Year day. Lichun falls on February 3, 4 or 5 at a different time each year, so we compare your birth minute against the Lichun instant rather than the date, and an early-February birth lands in the right year for its exact time.
Solar Terms (Jieqi) Month Boundaries
The month pillar does not change on day 1 of the lunar month; it is determined by the entry into specific solar terms each month to reflect real seasonal energies. Solar term tables are published in Beijing time (UTC+8), so we convert your birth moment into that frame before comparing.
Local Solar Time Adjustments
Give us your birth city and we shift your birth time to local solar time: a longitude correction plus the equation of time. The hour pillar follows the real position of the sun, not the timezone clock. Without a birth city we use the clock time as given and flag it on the result.
How the Four Pillars Map Your Life Layers
Each pillar in BaZi is not an isolated prediction. It represents an energetic layer connecting your internal psychology to external environments.
Roots & Social Impression
Represents your family heritage, childhood surroundings, and how you naturally present yourself to strangers or broader social networks.
Career Engine & Peers
Governed by seasonal solar terms. Reflects your professional drive, work ethic, leadership style, and relationship with colleagues.
Daymaster & Intimate Bond
The stem is your Daymaster (true self). The branch represents your inner private world, psychological sanctuary, and dynamics with your life partner.
Inner Ambitions & Legacy
Covers desires you keep secret, long-term personal creative projects, and the peace of mind you cultivate in your mature years.
Why BaZi at SPYLL Is Not Fortune Telling
We do not believe your destiny is locked into rigid fate. SPYLL treats BaZi as an ancient energetic archetype framework aligned with modern behavioral science. The goal is not to predict fatalistic events, but to provide an objective mirror for understanding your unconscious behavioral patterns, innate strengths, and blindspots.
