The Zi Wei Dou Shu 12 palaces are the twelve boxes of a ZWDS chart, each standing for one area of life: self, siblings, spouse, children, money, health, travel, friends, career, property, inner life, and parents. The stars sitting in each palace decide what it says, and palaces facing each other are read together.
That split explains why someone who runs a meeting with total confidence can go hesitant the moment the subject is romance. William James made a similar point in The Principles of Psychology (1890): a person has as many social selves as there are distinct groups of people whose opinion they care about. Zi Wei Dou Shu gives each of those roles its own box. If you are new to the system, the beginner's guide to Zi Wei Dou Shu covers the basics first.
The Zi Wei Dou Shu 12 palaces in order
The sequence always starts at the Life Palace. Where the Life Palace lands in your chart is worked out from your lunar birth month and birth hour, so a wrong birth time can shift the whole layout.
| No | Palace | Chinese name | Area of life |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Life Palace | Ming Gong 命宮 | Core personality and values |
| 2 | Siblings Palace | Xiong Di Gong 兄弟宮 | Siblings and peers |
| 3 | Spouse Palace | Fu Qi Gong 夫妻宮 | Long-term romance and conflict at home |
| 4 | Children Palace | Zi Nv Gong 子女宮 | Children, students, direct reports |
| 5 | Wealth Palace | Cai Bo Gong 財帛宮 | Cash flow, spending habits, risk appetite |
| 6 | Health Palace | Ji E Gong 疾厄宮 | Physical wellness and how the body reacts to stress |
| 7 | Travel Palace | Qian Yi Gong 遷移宮 | Life away from home, public presence |
| 8 | Friends Palace | Jiao You Gong 交友宮 | Wider network, teams, friendships |
| 9 | Career Palace | Guan Lu Gong 官祿宮 | Professional direction and work style |
| 10 | Property Palace | Tian Zhai Gong 田宅宮 | Home, land, the feel of where you live |
| 11 | Spirit Palace | Fu De Gong 福德宮 | Peace of mind, life satisfaction, stress relief |
| 12 | Parents Palace | Fu Mu Gong 父母宮 | Parents, mentors, authority figures |
Palace 8 has an older name, Pu Yi Gong (僕役宮), the palace of servants. Some books still use it, so don't be thrown when you see both.
The self palaces: Life, Health, and Spirit
These three read you from the inside. The Life Palace is the lens you bring to everything that happens, and it is the first palace read in any chart.
The Spirit Palace (Fu De) is read for life satisfaction and how you wind down, through hobbies or time alone, for example. The Health Palace (Ji E) maps how your body behaves under pressure in symbolic terms. It cannot diagnose anything, so physical symptoms are still a matter for a doctor.
The relationship palaces: Siblings, Spouse, Children, Friends, Parents
These five read how you relate to other people, from equals to those above and below you. The Siblings Palace covers peers and the business partners you trust most. The Friends Palace covers the wider circle: communities, work teams, acquaintances.
The Spouse Palace (Fu Qi) is read for what you look for in a life partner and how the two of you handle conflict. The Children Palace covers your own children as well as students and direct reports. The Parents Palace also reads your relationship with bosses, mentors, and official rules.
The material palaces: Wealth, Travel, Career, Property
These four read what happens outside the home and what you get from it. The Wealth Palace is read for how you earn and spend. The Career Palace holds your professional direction and how you deal with authority.
The Travel Palace (Qian Yi) is read for how you act away from familiar ground: moving abroad, business trips, meeting strangers. The Property Palace covers house and land, and the mood inside that house.
The 6 pairs of opposite palaces
The twelve palaces sit in a circle, so each one has an opposite directly across from it. Each pair is read together, because the stars in the opposite palace color the one you are reading.
| Palace | Opposite palace | What the pair is usually read for |
|---|---|---|
| Life (Ming) | Travel (Qian Yi) | Who you are inside and how you come across outside |
| Siblings (Xiong Di) | Friends (Jiao You) | Close circle and wide circle |
| Spouse (Fu Qi) | Career (Guan Lu) | Close relationships and the demands of work |
| Children (Zi Nv) | Property (Tian Zhai) | The people you look after and the home they live in |
| Wealth (Cai Bo) | Spirit (Fu De) | Money and peace of mind |
| Health (Ji E) | Parents (Fu Mu) | Your body and your relationship with authority figures |
The Spouse and Career pair is the one people feel most in daily life. SPYLL's palace data reads them as opposites because emotional grounding at home carries straight into work performance, and the other way round.
What is san fang si zheng?
San fang si zheng (三方四正) means reading one palace together with three others: the two palaces that form a triangle with it, plus its opposite. For the Life Palace, the triangle is the Wealth Palace and the Career Palace, and the opposite is the Travel Palace.
So when someone reads your personality from the Life Palace, they are really looking at four boxes at once. The steps for doing this on a real chart are in how to read a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart.
How do you read an empty palace?
An empty palace (kong gong) has none of the 14 major stars. It is common and does not mean that area of life is missing. ZWDS reads it by borrowing the major stars from the opposite palace.
As an illustration, say the Life Palace is empty and the Travel Palace across from it holds Tian Ji, which SPYLL's data reads as quick thinking and sharp planning. This person is read as having Tian Ji traits, but more easily shaped by their surroundings, because those traits are borrowed from an outward-facing palace. The usual advice is to build clear personal principles so the environment doesn't set the direction.
Common mix-ups about the 12 palaces
The ZWDS Spouse Palace often gets confused with the BaZi spouse palace. In BaZi, the spouse palace is the earthly branch of the day pillar, with its own clash and combination rules, as covered in the post on zheng yuan and commitment. In ZWDS it is one of 12 boxes, and the stars inside decide what it says.
Nor do the 12 palaces have anything to do with the 12 zodiac animals. Your animal comes from the branch of your birth year, while the palace layout depends on your birth month and hour. If you study BaZi too, the beginner's guide to BaZi helps keep the two vocabularies apart.
Star count can mislead too: a palace crowded with stars is not automatically strong. Each star has a different brightness depending on where it sits, so the number of stars is not the measure.
Get your birth time wrong by one shichen (two hours) and your Life Palace can move to another box, taking the whole reading with it. To see your own 12 palaces, build a chart in the SPYLL Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator with your birth date and the most exact birth time you have, then start with your Life Palace and its san fang si zheng before reading any other box. If you want the Zi Wei reading combined with the rest of your profile, fill in SPYLL's profiling with the same details.
